Earlier this year, an insane act of terrorism resulted in 50+ casualties of Muslims gathered to offer Jummah prayers in two mosques in Christchurch, New Zealand. The incident shocked the whole world when a terrorist streamed his barbarian act of terrorism ‘LIVE’ on Facebook and many people shared it all over the world. Facebook has done well in removing all violent content from its platform and has also suspended, banned many profiles. After the incident, Facebook had received a lot of criticism to come up with positive measures to curb violent live streams from the platform.
On May 14th, the company announced on its newsroom about its future plans of Facebook LIVE.
The company will now have one strike policy for Facebook live in connection with offences. According to Facbeook;
We will now apply a ‘one strike’ policy to Live in connection with a broader range of offenses. From now on, anyone who violates our most serious policies will be restricted from using Live for set periods of time – for example 30 days – starting on their first offense. For instance, someone who shares a link to a statement from a terrorist group with no context will now be immediately blocked from using Live for a set period of time.
We plan on extending these restrictions to other areas over the coming weeks, beginning with preventing those same people from creating ads on Facebook.
Facebook realizes the importance of keeping its platform clean. In order to provide unfettered across to its services, the restrictions will be applied to keep people safe on the platform. The goal is to eliminate the risk of abuse on LIVE stream so people can continue using it in a positive way by sharing good content.
