Microsoft announces $17.5B investment in India to strengthen AI efforts

Microsoft announced plans to invest $17.5 billion in India over the next four years, expanding its AI and cloud infrastructure in the country. The move positions India as a critical battleground for global tech companies, given its massive internet and smartphone user base.

The investment, Microsoft’s largest in Asia, will fund new data centers, AI infrastructure, and skilling programs from 2026 to 2029, building on the $3 billion the company committed earlier this year.

Strategic Push Amid Global AI Competition

The announcement comes as U.S. tech giants ramp up AI and cloud investments worldwide. India’s rapidly growing developer base, vast consumer market, and strong digital adoption make it a strategic hub for AI and cloud services.

The move also pressures rivals such as Google, Amazon, and OpenAI, who are expanding in India to meet demand for cloud services and AI tools across businesses, startups, and government agencies.

Key Infrastructure and Data Center Expansion

Microsoft plans to open a new data center region in Hyderabad by mid-2026, its largest in India, featuring three availability zones—roughly the size of two Eden Gardens stadiums. The company will also continue expanding in its existing regions, including Chennai, Hyderabad, and Pune.

As part of this expansion, Microsoft will offer sovereign cloud options:

  • Sovereign Public Cloud across all India regions

  • Sovereign Private Cloud via Azure Local for connected or air-gapped operations

These offerings aim to meet regulatory and data-residency requirements, support high-performance workloads with the latest Nvidia GPUs, and provide Microsoft 365 services.

AI Integration in Government Platforms

Microsoft will collaborate with India’s Ministry of Labour and Employment to integrate AI capabilities into e-Shram and the National Career Service platforms. These initiatives aim to provide AI-powered services for 310 million informal workers, including:

  • Multilingual access

  • AI-assisted job matching

  • Predictive analytics on skill and demand trends

  • Automated résumé creation

  • Personalized career pathways

Accelerating Skilling Programs

Through its ADVANTA(I)GE India initiative, Microsoft has already trained 5.6 million people since January, helping over 125,000 individuals secure jobs or start businesses.

The company is now doubling its commitment, aiming to equip 20 million Indians with basic AI skills by 2030, working with government agencies, industry partners, and public digital platforms.

India as a Global AI Hub

India has emerged as a hotspot for global tech investment, attracting major firms due to its large internet subscriber base, hundreds of millions of smartphone users, and a growing startup ecosystem.

  • Google recently announced a $15 billion AI and data-center investment, building on its $10 billion pledge in 2020

  • OpenAI and Anthropic have set up offices in India

  • Google and Perplexity have partnered with Reliance Jio and Bharti Airtel to expand reach

Despite strong demand, data center expansion faces challenges, including patchy power supply, high energy costs, and water scarcity in some regions, which could raise operating expenses for hyperscalers.

Government Incentives and Support

The Indian government has rolled out incentives for AI and semiconductor projects, eased certain regulations, and encouraged partnerships with domestic telecom and IT firms. These efforts aim to anchor the global AI value chain in India while accelerating digital infrastructure.
