Several Chinese smartphone makers are reportedly developing new models that combine under-display selfie cameras with advanced 3D facial recognition. This would be a first in the industry, as no current phone offers both features in one device.
A New Step in Biometric Tech
According to well-known tech tipster Digital Chat Station, internal testing has already begun on Android devices aiming to support 3D face scanning without any visible camera module. This move seems like a direct challenge to Apple’s Face ID, which still leads the market in 3D face unlock technology.
The report does not mention any specific brands or models. But it matches current trends in China’s smartphone market. Companies like ZTE and Honor have tested both under-display cameras and 3D sensing. However, they haven’t combined both features in a single device yet.
Existing Efforts So Far
Honor’s Magic 7 Pro is one of the few Android phones with 3D face recognition. ZTE has released several phones with invisible selfie cameras. These were launched under its Nubia series, including the Z70S Ultra. But no phone has combined invisible cameras with 3D face unlock in one working device yet.
The Big Technical Hurdles
Blending 3D facial recognition into a hidden setup is hard. These systems use infrared sensors and structured light. It’s difficult to place them under the screen without losing accuracy.
Under-display cameras also face issues. Their image quality is still lower than that of regular selfie cameras. It’s not clear how new phones will fix both problems. They need to offer strong security and clear selfies while keeping the screen seamless.
