India’s TCS Confirms 12,000 Job Reductions Due to Slowdown

As the demand for technology services continues to decline, Indian IT behemoth Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) said on Sunday that it will cut its global workforce by around 2 percent, or 12,000 positions.

According to the company, which is the biggest in India in terms of market value, middle- and senior-level staff will be the most affected by the reduction.

The layoffs will take place gradually over this year. TCS employs more than 613,000 people worldwide. It is one of the biggest employers in India’s IT sector.

The company said the restructuring will make it a “future-ready organization.” It plans to expand into new markets. It will also increase its use of artificial intelligence.

“As part of this journey, we will also be releasing associates from the organization whose deployment may not be feasible,” TCS said.

The company added that the process is being managed with “due care” to ensure that client operations are not disrupted.

The announcement comes shortly after TCS reported lower-than-expected revenue for the June quarter. CEO K. Krithivasan said earlier this month that persistent global economic and geopolitical uncertainty has led to a shrinking demand for IT services.

For decades, India’s IT industry has been one of the country’s most visible engines of growth, creating millions of white-collar jobs and fueling the rise of the middle class. TCS, Infosys, and Wipro became symbols of India’s global tech success story.

But the slowdown in the sector is now hitting both companies and workers hard. Thousands of fresh graduates are struggling to secure placements, while senior professionals face increasing pressure as automation and AI adoption reshape traditional IT roles.
