Google bans its employees from using Zoom

This is truly odd news as to why Google employees were using Zoom and didn’t rely on Google meet to fulfill their videoconferencing needs. Google issued a ban yesterday citing security concerns which in my book are legitimate and Zoom has been the most popular since the COVID-19 pandemic began.

Google informed its employees about the ban and informed that the software will not function on tier devices. It’s worth mentioning that Google offers an alternative but most of its employees rely on Zoom than Google Meet shows the dissonance of their own product.

Google spokesperson suggested that we have a long policy of not allowing employees to use unapproved apps for work that are outside of our corporate network but the irony they have been using for some time and Google has failed to police its employees regarding Zoom failure to secure private information. This news smells of a breach than a precaution.

It still boggles my mind why would google employees rely on software which has a notoriety for lax privacy and security concern such as a macOS flaw which allowed a Zoom URL to forcibly activate and breach macOS protocols into enabling Macbook webcam.

Other issues included exposed Zoom recording to undisclosed data sharing with Facebook. And to top that off exposed LinkedIn profiles with malware-infested install which was flagged by many security companies to avoid and still Google employees went and install this app.
