Amazon to Launch AI Tools for Film and TV Production Next Month

Last summer, Amazon MGM Studios launched a dedicated AI Studio to develop proprietary tools aimed at streamlining TV and film production. The focus includes enhancing character consistency across shots and supporting both pre- and post-production workflows.

According to Reuters, these tools are now ready to move beyond internal testing.

Amazon plans to start a closed beta program in March. Industry partners will be invited to trial the AI tools. The company expects to share initial results by May. When approached, Amazon declined to provide further details.

The AI Studio is working with industry veterans such as Robert Stromberg (Maleficent), Kunal Nayyar (The Big Bang Theory), and former Pixar animator Colin Brady. They are exploring the best ways to implement AI in production. Amazon is also leveraging Amazon Web Services and plans to collaborate with several LLM providers.

Albert Cheng, head of the AI Studios initiative, emphasized that the goal is to support creative teams, not replace them. The focus is on boosting efficiency, cutting costs, and protecting intellectual property. AI-generated content will not be absorbed into other models. For example, Amazon’s series House of David used 350 AI-generated shots in its second season.

The increasing use of AI in Hollywood has sparked debate. Many industry professionals are concerned about the impact on jobs, creativity, and the future of filmmaking.

Discussions around AI adoption are growing as more companies experiment. Netflix, for example, revealed that its series The Eternaut used generative AI to create a building collapse scene.

Amazon has also linked AI adoption to workforce changes. The company cut 16,000 jobs in January, following 14,000 layoffs last October. Efficiency improvements, partly driven by AI, were cited as a factor.
