TikTok settled on Monday evening in a high-profile lawsuit accusing social media companies of deliberately designing their products to be addictive, causing harm to users. Snap settled the case last week, while Meta and YouTube—the remaining defendants—are preparing to go to trial, with jury selection set to begin on Tuesday.
The lawsuit centers on a 19-year-old plaintiff identified by the initials K.G.M. It is one of the first in a series of legal challenges targeting social media platforms. Both Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg and YouTube chief Neal Mohan are expected to testify, potentially setting a precedent for how similar cases could be handled in the future.
By settling, TikTok and Snap are not admitting wrongdoing. Instead, they reached an agreement with the plaintiff outside of court. The specific terms of the settlements have not been disclosed.
