If Gmail wasn’t behaving normally, you weren’t alone—though Google says the issue has since been resolved.
According to Google’s Workspace status dashboard, problems began around 5 a.m. Pacific on Saturday. Users reported widespread email misclassification, with messages appearing in the wrong inbox tabs and an increase in spam warnings.
In practical terms, that meant emails typically sorted into Promotions, Social, or Updates were showing up in the Primary inbox, while messages from known senders were incorrectly flagged as spam. On social media, users complained that “all the spam is going directly to my inbox” and that Gmail’s filtering system seemed “suddenly completely busted.”
Throughout the day, Google updated its dashboard to say engineers were still working on a fix. By Saturday evening, the company said the issue had been “fully resolved for all users.”
“Some Gmail users experienced a misclassification of emails in their inbox and delays in receiving emails,” Google said in a dashboard update. The company added that incorrect spam warnings may still appear on messages received before the issue was resolved.
Google also said it plans to publish a full analysis of the incident after completing its internal investigation.
