The newest update lets you turn any photo from your camera roll into a short video. You pick the picture, choose a style you like, and it builds the animation for you. Plenty of creators have already been sharing these photo-to-video clips, turning single moments into short stories.
Another feature helps bring sketches and doodles to life. Snap a photo of your drawing, and it can move or appear in different settings. It’s not as common yet, but it’s there if you want to experiment.
YouTube also opened something called “AI Playground.” Think of it as a testing space where you can try new creative tools, get ideas from what others have made, and use prompts to spark your next clip. Right now, it’s available in the US, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand. You’ll find it by tapping the create button, then the sparkle icon.

Behind all this is Veo, Google’s video generation system. At the moment, everything runs on Veo 2, but Veo 3 is coming soon and should work faster and produce smoother results.
To keep things clear, YouTube will mark anything made with these AI tools using SynthID watermarks. That way, everyone can see which content used AI.
The photo animation option should appear in the Shorts camera “Effects” section over the next week for folks in the US, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand, with other countries added later this year.
If you want to test what AI can add to your Shorts, these updates might be worth a look.
