X CEO Linda Yaccarino Resigns After Grok Chatbot Sparks Antisemitism Controversy

Elon Musk’s social media platform X has been shaken by the sudden resignation of CEO Linda Yaccarino, one of Musk’s most senior and visible lieutenants. The 61-year-old advertising executive stepped down just a day after the platform’s AI chatbot, Grok, triggered outrage by publishing antisemitic content. Although X deleted the offensive posts, the public backlash was swift, and the damage, for many, was already done.

Yaccarino’s exit has raised new concerns about leadership at X. It has also brought back doubts about the platform’s future. Many advertisers had already stepped away from X. They were worried about toxic content and brand safety. Now, regaining their trust may be even harder.

The resignation came only months after X was formally acquired by XAI, Musk’s artificial intelligence startup, in a $33 billion all-stock deal. Yaccarino, who had been CEO for two years, announced her departure in a post on X, framing it as a personal decision. “I’ve decided to step down as CEO of X,” she wrote. Musk, who has a reputation for unexpectedly replacing senior leaders, simply responded, “Thank you for your contributions.”

A Turbulent Departure

Yaccarino’s departure adds to a growing sense of instability across Musk’s business empire. Tesla, where Musk also serves as CEO, is facing declining sales and a wave of executive departures. At the same time, Musk has found himself embroiled in a public feud with former U.S. President Donald Trump, after briefly serving in Trump’s Department of Government Efficiency before stepping down in May.

Yaccarino, a seasoned media executive and former Chair of Global Advertising at NBCUniversal, was brought in to help restore advertiser confidence in X. Her primary mission was to rebuild relationships with brands after many abandoned the platform over concerns about unchecked hate speech and extreme content following Musk’s takeover.

She never publicly gave a reason for her departure. Both X and Yaccarino declined to respond to media requests for comment, and it remains unclear when her resignation will formally take effect. No successor has yet been named.

Grok Controversy Triggers Fallout

The tipping point appears to have been Grok, the AI chatbot developed by Musk’s xAI, which recently posted content featuring antisemitic tropes and praise for Adolf Hitler.

The content was taken down quickly. Yaccarino released a statement soon after. She said she was working to rebuild advertiser trust. She also promised to prioritize safety on the platform. But many in the industry felt it wasn’t enough.

For them, the response came too late. Yaccarino had been trying to win back advertisers. At the same time, she took a tough stance against some. She even sued certain brands and the World Federation of Advertisers. She accused them of organizing a boycott against X.

“Yaccarino had to try to run the business while also regularly putting out fires,” said Jasmine Enberg, a vice president at eMarketer. Despite the challenges, Enberg noted that X’s ad business is projected to grow in 2025, suggesting that Yaccarino may have “accomplished what she was hired to do.”

Still, others point to a deeper disconnect between Yaccarino’s structured, brand-focused approach and Musk’s more erratic leadership style. “There may have been a lack of alignment between her method and Musk’s management,” said D.A. Davidson analyst Gil Luria. “The Grok episode may have brought that clash to the surface.”

Broader Challenges for Musk’s Empire

Yaccarino’s resignation follows an ongoing talent drain at Tesla. Musk’s trusted aide Omead Afshar and Jenna Ferrua, Tesla’s North America HR director, both exited the company last month, according to sources. Tesla shares dipped roughly 1% following news of Yaccarino’s exit.

Meanwhile, X remains under pressure. The company is dealing with a heavy debt burden, and Musk’s public controversies—including his endorsement of antisemitic conspiracy theories in late 2023—have made Yaccarino’s job all the more difficult.

Under her leadership, X attempted a pivot toward becoming the so-called “everything app” envisioned by Musk. The platform launched several features, including a smart TV app, and entered into a partnership with Visa to enable direct payments on the platform. According to the Financial Times, the company was also exploring the rollout of an X-branded credit or debit card.

What’s Next?

Yaccarino’s departure creates a major leadership gap. It comes at a critical time for X. The platform is still trying to win back advertisers. It also faces growing pressure over content and AI moderation.

The future of X now looks uncertain. One thing is clear—the Grok controversy has shaken leadership at the top. This may only be the start of more changes to come.
