7 Rules of Success by Steve Jobs

Steve Jobs is not alive but his struggle, hard work and advice will live forever. His impact on technology cannot be denied. He was visionary and he played his part in reshaping the future.

If you watch his life closely, you will see he adapted seven principles, never compromised on them and they were the reason for his success at Apple.

Rule #1 – Do what you love doing:

Jobs always emphasized on following your heart. His own life patron exhibits, he did what he loved doing and was most passionate about.

People with passion can change the world for the better.” Asked about the advice he would offer would-be entrepreneurs, he said, “I’d get a job as a busboy or something until I figured out what I was really passionate about”.

Rule #2 – Put a dent in the universe:

Steve had a vision. He had an eye into the future. He wanted to make an impact in the world with the innovative technologies and he did it with Apple and iPhone.

He once asked then-Pepsi President, John Sculley, “Do you want to spend your life selling sugar water or do you want to change the world?”

Don’t lose sight of the big vision.

Rule #3 – Build connections:

When young, he took calligraphy classes that didn’t have any practical use but when he was building Macintosh, the calligraphy classes came into use. Jobs also travelled to India and Asia. He took design and hospitality classes to get the education.

Make connections, even though they may not make any sense at one point of time but when you connect the dots, everything seems to fall in place.

Rule #4 – Learn to say NO:

When he came back to the company (Apple) in the ’90s, he reduced the company’s product like to 10 products from 350 products. He put his best team on each product. He faced criticism but he said ‘No’ to all unwanted products and rest is history.

Rule #5 – Create a different experience:

Jobs wanted Apple stores to be the state of the art experience for the customers. He built the reputation in a way that walk-in customers would say ‘WOW’ and they liked being at Apple. He believed everything is about the experience. A great experience will pull back your customer to you again.

Rule #6 – Master the message:

Communication is the key to success. You can have the world’s greatest product, idea or service but if you can not communicate, you are not making any impact. Jobs was a great storyteller, he inspired, motivated and built a narrative to his vision.

Rule #7 – Sell dreams, not products:

The only recipe of success in business is understanding your customer. Jobs understood his customers. The single front button on iPAD, iPhone changed the way we use technology because he made it simple and listened to the people and their requirement. Jobs business life teaches us, if you help your customers reach their dreams, you’ll win them over again and again.
