X is about to change how we chat. Its old Direct Messages will disappear. In their place, we’ll get something called XChat.
Zach Warunek, a software engineer at X, revealed the information. The entire DM system is disappearing, he remarked.
What’s different about XChat?
It’s not just a tweak. It’s a full rebuild of messaging on X. Warunek hinted it will feel fresh. We might see stronger security. We might see more ways to share and organize our chats.

Leaked screenshots show some neat tricks. First up: end-to-end encryption. That means only you and the person you’re talking to can read your messages implies that the only people who can read your messages are you and the other person. It’s a step up, matching apps like Signal.
Other tips from the leaks:
- You’ll be able to send files easily.
- You can mark a message unread — handy if you need a second look.
- You can delete a message for everyone, even after it’s sent.
When will XChat arrive?
No one knows for sure. Screenshots of a new icon in the sidebar point to a coming launch.
Elon Musk even hinted he’ll drop his phone number soon and only use X for calls and texts. That tells me bigger changes are coming.
In my view, this is a bold move. Updating a core feature like messaging isn’t easy. But it could make X feel more modern.
And if it nails security and usability, it could pull ahead of other chat apps. I’m curious to see how it all works once XChat goes live.
