Shifting from Boeing Starliner to SpaceX Dragon

In June 2024, Williams and Wilmore made their first trip to the ISS in Boeing’s Starliner spacecraft. Due to chronic technical problems with Starliner, their eight day mission extended to more than eight months. NASA chose to return them aboard SpaceX’s human Dragon instead, putting human safety and mission effectiveness first.

“Human spaceflight is full of unforeseen difficulties,” said Steve Stich, head of NASA’s Commercial Crew Program, complementing SpaceX’s flexibility in handling the crew rotation.

Recover crews will pick up the astronauts after the Crew Dragon makes a safe re-entry and lands in the Gulf of Mexico or the Atlantic Ocean .

ISS Crew Rotation: Crew-10 Arrival

The expected arrival of Crew-10 guarantees a seamless handover and keeps the ISS fully staffed. NASA astronauts Anne McClain and Nichole Ayers, Roscosmos cosmonaut Kirill Peskov, and Takuya Onishi of the Japan Aerospace Development Agency are among the arriving crew. Before Williams and Wilmore leave, the new crew will go through a week-long transfer procedure with Crew-9 after landing with the ISS.

Human spaceflight inevitably involves difficulties and delays, but NASA is committed to mission success and safety. Their prolonged stay demonstrates the erratic nature and tenacity of contemporary space research as Williams and Wilmore get ready for their eagerly anticipated homecoming.
