Saeed Masood Usmani of the faculty of the Department of Mass Communication received a PhD from the Graduate Research Management Council of Federal Urdu University, Karachi, during its 66th meeting. Under the guidance of renowned journalist, scholar, and author Professor Dr. Tauseef Ahmed Khan, he completed his PhD study, which was titled:
“The Appreciation of FM Radio Transmission in Karachi: An Audience Analysis”
After a successful public defense and positive assessments from both domestic and foreign judges, the degree was awarded.
It is remarkable that Dr. Usmani, who had four heart attacks and a stroke while pursuing his PhD, accomplished this educational milestone at the age of 80. He was able to overcome these obstacles because of his unshakable commitment to education and his intense love of reading, which has earned him the nickname “walking encyclopedia.”

With input from more than 5,000 respondents from various areas of Karachi—2,500 males, 2,226 women, and 400 transgender people—the research is notable for its inclusion and is a unique and thorough investigation in the field of media research.
The study’s major conclusions involve the following:
- Seventy percent of respondents thought FM radio contributed to increased political consciousness.
- 86% of respondents said FM radio was essential for providing information about public service programs, safety, government communications, and natural catastrophes.
- 96% of respondents concurred that FM radio has shaped cultural and social perceptions.
- Ninety percent reported routinely listening to FM radio.
- Eighty percent said it was important for the growth of language.
- According to 90% of respondents, FM radio is still unaffected by contemporary media.
