Say Hello to Neptune: A Short-Video App for Fun Over Follower Counts

Neptune, A Short-Video App

There’s a new video app in town, and it’s shaking things up. It’s called Neptune, and it’s aiming to take on the big names like TikTok, Instagram Reels, and YouTube Shorts — but with a twist.

Neptune is still in beta, but it’s already catching attention. Nearly 1,000 users are testing it, and over 400,000 people are waiting to get in. Yep, that many.

Next week, the software will formally launch on the App Store. Users of Android? You’ll need to wait another six months or so.

Neptune was started by Ashley Darling, someone who knows the influencer world inside out.

She used to work as a talent director at OPTYX, helping under-the-radar creators grow.

But she got tired of seeing creativity pushed aside by follower counts and algorithms.

“I kept hearing the same thing — people missed the days when social media was fun,” she said in a chat with TechCrunch. “So I stopped waiting for a better platform and decided to build one.”

One big thing that makes Neptune stand out? Creators can choose to hide their likes and followers.

No pressure, no chasing numbers. They call it “ghost metrics.” It’s optional, but it gives creators a break from the constant comparison game.

Neptune’s feed works like TikTok’s — swipe up, scroll through short videos, and drop a comment if something grabs you.

But instead of pushing viral hits and mega influencers to the top, Neptune’s algorithm puts the spotlight on content quality and your interests.

The company says this is about giving power back to everyday creators. CMO Timur Tugberk said.

“Neptune is for connection, not clout,”

The app is still pretty barebones right now. There’s a video feed and a search bar — that’s about it.

No editing tools. No DMs. But more is coming. The team is working on adding livestreaming, music features, playlists, and more ways for creators to earn, like tips and subscriptions.

Another smart feature? “Hop Back.” It lets you pick up a video right where you left off — no more losing your place if the app refreshes or crashes.

With TikTok’s future in the U.S. still up in the air, Neptune could be jumping in at just the right time.

If you’re a creator looking for less stress and more fun, keep an eye on this one.
