Microsoft has finally confirmed the discontinuation of Skype, which will take effect in May 2025, marking the closing of one of the most iconic communication tools of the early internet world. Furthermore, Skype users are being urged to migrate to Microsoft Teams.

Microsoft made several unsuccessful attempts to keep Skype relevant with redesigns and updates. Devoted fans were irritated when a 2017 update added Snapchat-like functionality. Microsoft no longer included Skype with Windows 11 by 2021; instead, Teams was the preferred communication app.

“We’ve learned a lot from Skype, but now is the time to simplify our services and focus on innovation through Teams,” said Jeff Teper, president of Microsoft 365 collaboration apps and platforms, who explained the decision.
