During a fireside chat with Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg at the LlamaCon conference on Tuesday, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella revealed that between 20% to 30% of the code in Microsoft’s repositories is now written by software, specifically, by AI tools.
Varying Results Across Programming Languages
Nadella mentioned the company’s expectations when it comes to the possibilities of auto-generated code in terms of its usefulness when applied to a particular programming language. Results have been better with Python than with C++, which has been more sluggish.
Looking Ahead to 2030
Microsoft’s Chief Technology Officer, Kevin Scott, has predicted that by 2030, up to 95% of code will be written by AI, signaling a major shift toward automation in software engineering workflows.
Meta’s Approach Still Unclear
In response to Nadella’s question, Zuckerberg admitted he couldn’t specify the exact percentage of Meta’s code generated by AI. This suggests that Meta may not be tracking AI-written code as closely as Microsoft.
Google Reports Similar Trends
Sundar Pichai, CEO of Google, mentioned during an earnings call last week that currently, over 30% of code developed in the company is done through AI systems. As for Google and Microsoft, they have not gone into detail explaining how they qualify their code to be AI-generated, so such figures should be taken with a pinch of salt.
