In the upcoming months, Google will make its Gemini AI assistant available in all vehicles that support Android Auto. The announcement was made during Google’s Android Show, just ahead of the 2025 I/O developer conference.
But that’s not all, Gemini will also come to vehicles with Google’s built-in car operating system later this year. Google says this update will make driving not just more productive, but more fun too.
Smarter Voice Commands on the Road
One of the biggest updates is Gemini’s role as a smarter, more natural-sounding voice assistant. Unlike older systems, you won’t need to talk like a robot to get things done. You can ask it to send messages, play music, or help you with daily tasks, just like you would with Google Assistant, but more fluidly.
For example, if you regularly message someone in Spanish, Gemini can remember that and automatically translate for you. By looking through Google Maps reviews and listings, it can also locate locations along your path, such as “vegan taco spots.”
Introducing “Gemini Live”: Real-Time Conversations in the Car
Google is also launching something called Gemini Live. Think of it as a hands-free co-pilot that’s always listening and ready to chat.
Whether you’re brainstorming travel plans, finding kid-friendly dinner ideas, or asking about Roman history, Gemini Live will be there to help — all while you’re behind the wheel. Google says this won’t be distracting. They believe it’ll make things easier by cutting down the number of commands you need to remember.

Safety and the Future of AI in Cars
While some drivers are asking carmakers to go back to physical buttons and dials, Google believes Gemini will reduce mental load by making in-car tech simpler to use, thanks to its advanced natural language processing.
Still, there’s a lot more in the works. For now, Gemini relies on cloud processing. But Google is teaming up with automakers to make sure future cars can run Gemini locally, which could make it faster and more reliable, especially on the move.
Could Gemini Use Car Cameras and Sensors?
Modern cars already collect tons of data from sensors and cameras. So, will Gemini eventually use this info too?
Google hasn’t confirmed anything yet. But they said they’re exploring how to make the most of this data safely and effectively. According to the Android Auto team, there are some “very interesting” possibilities shortly.

Global Rollout and Language Support
Gemini will launch in all the countries where Google’s generative AI is already available. It will also support over 40 languages, making it accessible to a wide range of drivers across the globe.
