xAI Unveils NSFW AI Companions Amid Mental Health Fears

xAI has rolled out something that’ll raise plenty of eyebrows: animated AI companions that can flirt, joke around, and, if you stick around long enough, chat in NSFW mode.

They’ve named the first batch Ani (a goth anime character) and Bad Rudy (a misbehaving panda). SuperGrok subscribers can switch this feature on in settings and start chatting. The bots respond with gestures, facial expressions, and, yes, explicit language once you’ve built enough “rapport.”

It feels like an odd choice for a tech that could do almost anything. But here we are.

On the launch screen, Ani takes center stage. Users can chat with her by voice and slowly build a “relationship.” The idea seems to be that these bots will keep people company and maybe help ease loneliness.

The problem is, there’s barely any solid research on what happens when millions start forming bonds with AI. Early studies suggest it can backfire: people might lean too heavily on their digital companion, drift further from real-life connections, and feel even worse if the bot stops responding or changes its behavior.

And while there are already dozens of AI girlfriend apps out there, it hits differently when it’s coming from X, with its huge reach and younger audience. The mental health risks aren’t small.

Elon Musk, never one to stop at the obvious, hinted that one day you might “bring these bots to life” through his Optimus robots. Realistically, that won’t happen. But even teasing that possibility feeds into fantasy and false hope, especially for users who might already feel isolated.

It’s a move that sits right on brand for Elon: bold, controversial, and sure to spark headlines. And maybe that’s the whole point. After all, if xAI didn’t build it, someone else would. The demand is already there.

Still, it’s surprising to see a platform of this size so willing to step into a space with so many potential legal and ethical questions.

For now, though, it’s full speed ahead. Whether it ends up helping people feel less lonely—or pushes them deeper into it—remains to be seen.
