Right now, WhatsApp gives you a few ways to update your profile photo. You can take a new picture with your camera, pick one from your phone’s gallery, or try out the “AI images” feature.
Last month, we heard WhatsApp was testing a way to let users add custom avatars next to their profile pictures. Now, there’s more news.
According to WABetaInfo, WhatsApp is working on a new option that will let you import your profile photo from Facebook or Instagram. The team shared a screenshot showing the updated profile menu in the Android app, where two new options appear:
-
Add from Facebook
-
Add from Instagram

If your WhatsApp is connected to the same Meta account as your Facebook or Instagram, you’ll be able to pull in your profile photo directly from there.
The good news? This feature is completely optional. It’s turned off by default, and you’ll need to link your accounts through Meta’s Account Center to use it. WhatsApp says this won’t affect your existing privacy settings.
Right now, the feature is only available to some beta testers using WhatsApp beta version 2.25.21.23 for Android. There’s no official release date yet for all users, but it could be rolled out more widely soon.
