WhatsApp Status is getting a Close Friends feature
WhatsApp is about to make Status updates more personal with a brand new Close Friends option. Much like Instagram Stories, this feature will allow users to share photos, videos, and updates with a smaller, trusted circle instead of their entire contact list.
Currently, WhatsApp users can only choose between “My Contacts,” “My Contacts Except,” or “Only Share With” to control who sees their updates. While the “Only Share With” option has been a workaround for years, the new Close Friends feature makes things simpler and more private.

According to early reports from WABetaInfo, users will soon be able to create a dedicated Close Friends list directly from their privacy settings. When sharing a Status, they’ll be able to select whether it goes to all contacts or just this private group. Updates sent to Close Friends will also be marked with a distinct ring, so people know they’re seeing something more personal.
Just like on Instagram, the list itself will remain private meaning contacts won’t be notified if they’re added or removed. With more than 1.5 billion people posting Status updates daily, this feature is expected to be a big win for users who prefer more control over their audience.
