WhatsApp is adding a new document-scanning feature for Android. It was first seen in beta version 2.25.18.29 for testers on the Google Play Beta Program. The feature is still being developed, so it’s not available on most phones yet. It will be released in a future update.
Earlier this year, the exact feature landed on iPhones. It lets people snap a photo of a page and turn it into a PDF without leaving WhatsApp and without hunting for an app like CamScanner. Now the same built-in scanner is finally headed for Android, so users there will soon enjoy the same handy shortcut.
How It Works
You’ll find a new option called “Scan document” in the file-sharing menu. When you tap it, your camera will open with two modes:
-
Manual Mode—You take the photo yourself, giving you full control.
-
Automatic Mode—WhatsApp detects the document edges and snaps the picture for you.

Instant PDF Creation
After you scan the document, WhatsApp will automatically turn it into a PDF. You can then send it to your contacts or groups right away.
Everything happens on your phone using Android’s built-in features. Nothing is uploaded unless you send it, and all messages are still protected by end-to-end encryption.
Availability
Right now the tool isn’t live for everyone, but it’s already confirmed as in development, and WhatsApp plans to ship it in the next big update.
So hang tight; scanning, editing, and sharing files straight through your chat will soon feel a lot smoother.
