Trump Claims TikTok Will Be Sold to U.S. Buyers

President Donald Trump claims that a group of “very wealthy people” are going to purchase the TikTok app for short-form videos.

In an appearance with Fox News on Sunday morning, Trump stated, “By the way, we have a buyer for TikTok.” “I believe I’ll most likely need China’s blessing. President Xi Jinping will most likely carry it out, in my opinion.

Trump refused to provide any information about the purchasers, stating merely that he would make their identities public in two weeks apparently his preferred time frame.

A measure requiring the app’s owner, ByteDance, to sell the app or face its prohibition in the US has been repeatedly postponed by Trump. Making “a joint venture between the present owners and/or prospective buyers whereby the U.S. gets a 50% ownership” was his “Initial thought,” he stated in January.

Although Musk currently appears like a less likely choice, he has also stated that he was open to allies Larry Ellison or Elon Musk purchasing the app.

In April of last year, the US Congress enacted a law requiring TikTok to sell. The lawmakers’ concerns were that the app or its parent firm may provide the Chinese government access to user data from US users, which TikTok rejected.

Although Trump had criticized the app during his first term, he now supports its ongoing usage in the US after seeing it as an important factor to his victory in the 2024 election.

Trump has frequently used executive actions to postpone the law’s implementation, which has come under fire for defying congressional members. The bill was meant to go into effect on January 19.

TikTok lost its appeal to the US Supreme Court despite contesting the law’s constitutionality.
