Spotify Adds In App Messages for Sharing Music and Podcasts
Spotify is stepping further into the social space with a new feature called Messages, which lets listeners share and chat about songs, podcasts, and audiobooks without leaving the app.
The update is rolling out this week to free and Premium users who are 16 or older in select markets. For now, it’s only available on mobile.
Messages work more like private chats rather than group conversations. When you’re listening to something, you can tap the share button, choose a contact, and send it directly. If you’ve never messaged that person before, the request will sit in their inbox until they accept similar to how Instagram handles message requests. After that, you can text, react with emojis, and keep the conversation going around your favorite content.

The feature lives under the profile photo in the top left corner of the app, where Spotify also suggests contacts you may know from shared playlists, Jams, Blends, or family and duo plans.
Importantly, the feature is optional. If users prefer, they can turn it off and continue sharing music through apps like WhatsApp, Instagram, or Telegram. Spotify says all conversations are encrypted, though automated systems still scan for harmful or illegal content.

With Messages, Spotify is clearly trying to keep listeners inside its ecosystem longer, blending streaming with social interaction in a way that could change how people discover and talk about music.
