OpenAI has officially released GPT-5, the most advanced version of its AI model powering ChatGPT. Previously, ChatGPT users had to switch between models like GPT-4, GPT-4.5, or experimental o3 depending on the task. GPT-5 eliminates that friction by automatically selecting the best mode for each query.

Key changes:

• Standard GPT-5 is the default for all logged-in users (web, mobile, and desktop).

• GPT-5 Thinking (paid plans) delivers slower but deeper reasoning.

• GPT-5 Thinking Pro (Pro & Team tiers) prioritizes maximum accuracy.

Older models — including GPT-4o, GPT-4.1, GPT-4.5, and o3/o4 — are being retired. Ongoing chats will automatically transition to the closest GPT-5 equivalent.

Voice Mode will remain on GPT-4o for now and won’t be upgraded immediately.

Faster, Smarter, and Multimodal

OpenAI calls GPT-5 its fastest model yet — a result of Altman’s push to drastically reduce response times.

“One of the things I had been pushing the team on was like, ‘Hey, we need to make it way, way faster,’” Altman said. “After using GPT-5, going back to GPT-4 feels miserable.”

GPT-5 is also multimodal, able to process and generate text, images, and voice in a single conversation. In live demos, it created hundreds of lines of code in seconds, built a French-language learning program, and produced nuanced creative writing — including an emotionally layered eulogy.

Major Accuracy and Safety Upgrades

One of the biggest criticisms of previous ChatGPT versions was “hallucination”—confidently producing false facts. GPT-5 significantly reduces these errors.

What’s improved:

• Better coding – Generates functional apps and websites.

• Advanced creative writing – More natural and human-like storytelling.

• Guideline-sensitive responses – Instead of refusing prompts outright, GPT-5 tries to provide the safest possible helpful answer.

• Health awareness—Can proactively flag potential medical or mental health concerns, while clearly stating it’s not a substitute for professional help.

During the launch event, Altman showcased GPT-5’s value in healthcare decision-making, inviting a cancer patient to share how ChatGPT helped her weigh treatment options.

Personalized ChatGPT: New Personalities and Visual Options

For the first time, ChatGPT users can customize the AI’s tone. In the Customize ChatGPT settings, you can now choose between:

• Cynic—Sarcastic and blunt.

• Robot – Dry and precise.

• Listener—Calm, reflective, and supportive.

• Nerd—Inquisitive and eager to explain.

These styles apply to text mode only; voice interactions maintain the standard tone.

You can now also choose an accent color for interface elements, such as conversation bubbles, the Voice button, and highlighted text. This works on both mobile and web.

Voice Mode 2.0

The updated Voice Mode is more adaptive, adjusting its tone, pace, and length based on your instructions. It now works with custom GPTs, expanding its creative and professional applications.

Usage changes:

• Plus users—nearly unlimited daily access.

• Free users – Several hours per day.

Standard Voice Mode will be retired within 30 days.

A Step Toward Artificial General Intelligence

Altman describes GPT-5 as “generally intelligent,” capable of handling a wide variety of complex tasks. However, it is not yet true AGI—the kind of system that autonomously learns and surpasses humans at most jobs.

“We’re still missing something quite important — many things quite important,” Altman said, citing the lack of continuous learning as a major limitation.

To illustrate the leap in intelligence, Altman compared previous versions:

• GPT-3 – Like talking to a high school student.

• GPT-4 – Like talking to a college student.

• GPT-5 – Like having a PhD-level expert in your pocket.
