OpenAI Makes ChatGPT Go Free for Indian Users
OpenAI is offering one year of free ChatGPT Go access to users in India who sign up starting November 4, aiming to grow its user base in the country. The plan, usually priced under $5, gives users more features and higher usage limits. India, now OpenAI’s second-largest market after the U.S., has seen rapid ChatGPT adoption but limited paid conversions so far.

Despite this, converting Indian users into paid customers has been challenging. Data from Appfigures showed that ChatGPT’s app brought in $3.6 million in in-app purchases during a 90-day period ending in August, despite more than 29 million downloads. The free Go plan could help OpenAI strengthen loyalty and expand usage before introducing more paid features later.
What ChatGPT Go Offers
The ChatGPT Go plan, which costs less than $5 per month, offers 10 times more usage than the free version. It allows users to generate longer responses, create images, and upload files for analysis. The plan also includes memory-based responses, enabling the chatbot to remember past interactions for a more personalized experience.

Nick Turley, OpenAI’s VP and head of ChatGPT, shared that user adoption in India has been “Inspiring,” adding that the company is eager to see how users will continue using the technology to create, learn, and innovate.

OpenAI isn’t alone in targeting India’s massive digital population. Google recently launched a free one-year AI Pro plan for students, while Perplexity AI teamed up with Airtel to offer its premium Pro version free to 360 million subscribers.
