Meta has announced a new AI feature for WhatsApp that lets you quickly catch up on unread messages. The tool, called Message Summaries, uses Meta AI to generate a summary of what you missed in a chat.
The feature is private and optional. Only you can see the summary—no one else in the chat will know you used it.
According to Meta, the feature relies on Private Processing technology, which means neither Meta nor WhatsApp can read your messages or see the summaries. Your privacy and chat encryption remain untouched.

Message Summaries builds on the AI features Meta introduced back in April. Those tools were designed to enhance the app without interfering with user privacy.
The summary option is turned off by default, but if it’s available for your account, WhatsApp will show a small icon to let you know.
For now, this new feature is being released in the U.S. only, and it currently supports English. Meta says support for more countries and languages will roll out later this year.
Previously, users could interact with Meta AI in chats to ask questions or tag messages for context, but the AI couldn’t access or read your conversations.
Now, with this update, WhatsApp can privately access chat context to offer summaries and writing suggestions—all while keeping the content private.
You’ll find the new feature in WhatsApp by going to
Settings > Chats > Private Processing
Here you can toggle individual AI features on or off based on your preference.
