Meta Plans to Discontinue Messenger Desktop Apps on Mac and Windows

Meta Ends Messenger Desktop Apps for Mac and Windows

Meta announced that it will shut down the Messenger desktop apps for Windows and Mac on December 15. After that date, users won’t be able to log in to the apps. Instead, they’ll be redirected to Facebook.com to access Messenger.

According to Meta, people using the desktop apps will receive an in-app notice before the shutdown. Once that message appears, users will have 60 days to keep using the app before it stops working completely. Meta also suggests deleting the app after that time since it won’t function anymore.

The change was first noticed by AppleInsider before Meta confirmed it publicly. The company says the goal is to simplify how people use Messenger and move them toward a more unified web experience.

If you still prefer using Messenger on your computer, there are a few options. Windows users can use the Facebook desktop app, while Mac and Windows users can easily access Messenger on the web.

Meta is also reminding users to turn on secure storage to protect their chat history before switching to the web version. To do this, click the settings icon above your profile picture, then go to Privacy & Safety → End-to-End Encrypted Chats → Message Storage, and make sure “Turn on secure storage” is enabled. Once you move to Facebook.com, all your past chats will be available on every device.

The move comes a year after Meta replaced its native Messenger desktop app with a Progressive Web App (PWA) in 2024. That shift hinted that Meta might be planning to phase out the standalone apps altogether.

Some users are disappointed, especially those who liked having a separate window for messages. But Meta says the change will make Messenger more secure, faster, and easier to manage across platforms. The company is also focusing on improving end-to-end encryption and cross-platform syncing between Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp.

For now, users can keep chatting through the web without losing any messages or contacts. Meta hopes the update will make communication smoother as it continues merging its messaging services into one unified system.
