Google Rolls Out AI-Powered ‘Simplify’ Feature for iOS

Google has added a new tool called “Simplify” to its iOS app, designed to help users better understand dense or technical web content, without leaving the page. Whether you’re reading something complex or just trying to make sense of technical jargon, this feature breaks it down into easier, more readable language.

The tool was developed by Google Research and is based on a method that refines how the original text is presented. The goal is to simplify the language while keeping the core information intact. According to Google, early testing showed that users found it easier to understand and remember content after using the feature.

By building this function directly into the Google app, the company is encouraging users to stay within its ecosystem for help with tricky topics, instead of turning to other tools or platforms.

Using Simplify is straightforward. When browsing in the Google app, just highlight the section of text you want help with and tap the “Simplify” icon. A more readable version of the text will appear right there, allowing you to continue reading without losing your place.

Google shared an example to show how it works. A technical paragraph that originally read:

“The complex pathology of this condition involves emphysematous destruction of lung parenchyma, diffuse interstitial fibrosis, changes in the composition of lung immune cells, increased production of immunomodulatory factors, and the prominent remodeling of pulmonary vasculature.”

Would be rewritten as:

“This complex condition involves damage to the lung tissue from emphysema, a disease that damages the air sacs in the lungs, and widespread scarring of the lung tissue, called fibrosis. The immune cells in the lungs change, and the body makes more immunomodulatory factors, substances that control the immune system. The blood vessels in the lungs also change a lot.”

Google explained in a blog post that the purpose of Simplify is to make learning easier for everyone, especially when dealing with challenging subjects.

“We want the rewritten version to make sense without leaving out important details or changing the original meaning.”

The new feature is rolling out to iOS users this week.
