Pakistan Launches First-Ever Digital ID Card for Citizens

With the introduction of its initial dematerialized digital identity card, Pakistan has made significant progress towards its digital transformation. As part of its 25th anniversary festivities, the National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA) introduced the new system.

The Pak ID mobile app will incorporate the new digital ID, enabling residents to keep their identification documents on their cellphones. Additionally, a digital authentication system is being developed to provide safe and quick identification for a range of services.

The Digital Economy Initiative, supported by the World Bank, is scheduled to start its trial period on Independence Day 2025.

Pakistan's First Digital ID Card Launched

Founder Major General (Retd.) Zahid Ehsan was among the high-ranking officials who attended the celebration held at NADRA headquarters to commemorate the event. Syed Mohsin Naqvi, the nation’s interior minister, hailed the effort as a turning point in the handling of identities.

Pakistan Post published special postage stamps and the State Bank of Pakistan released a unique coin to mark NADRA’s 25-year history. Additionally, a video showcasing NADRA’s accomplishments was shown.

Officials underlined NADRA’s function in supporting security forces and delivering identification services to isolated regions. In order to preserve correct data, the government also advised residents to revoke the ID cards of departed family members.
