OpenAI on Thursday introduced a ChatGPT group chat feature. This feature is currently being piloted in Japan, New Zealand, South Korea, and Taiwan. It allows users to collaborate directly within the app.

The group chat is available to Free, Plus, and Team users on both mobile and web platforms. OpenAI says the pilot explores how people use group conversations in ChatGPT.

The announcement follows earlier reports that OpenAI had been testing a direct-message-style tool.

OpenAI calls this pilot a “small first step” toward creating a more shared experience in ChatGPT. Early users are invited to provide feedback. Their insights will shape future expansions of the feature to other regions and plans.

Privacy and safety are prioritized. Private chats and personal ChatGPT memory remain completely private. Group chats are invitation-only, and members can leave at any time. Most participants can remove others, but the group creator can leave only voluntarily. For users under 18, content is filtered with extra safeguards and parental controls.

How to start a group chat

  • Tap the people icon and add participants.

  • Add participants directly or share a link.

  • Groups can include 1 to 20 people.

  • Adding someone to an existing chat creates a new group. The original conversation remains unchanged.

  • Each group has a short profile, and chats are organized in a labeled sidebar for easy access.

Group chats function like regular ChatGPT conversations but allow multiple people to join in. GPT‑5.1 Auto handles responses and offers features such as:

  • Search

  • Image generation

  • File uploads

  • Dictation

In group chats, ChatGPT’s usage limits apply only when it responds. Messages between humans do not count toward AI response limits.

ChatGPT has also learned social skills for group chats. It knows when to jump in and when to stay silent. Users can tag ChatGPT to get a response. It can react with emojis and use profile photos to create personalized images in the conversation.

This group chat feature marks the next step in OpenAI’s evolution from a simple AI assistant to a social platform-like experience. In late September, OpenAI launched Sora 2, a standalone social media app with a TikTok-style feed for AI-generated videos. It includes:

  • Algorithmic recommendations based on user activity and location

  • Parental controls

  • Direct messaging capabilities

The rollout of group chats and social features shows OpenAI’s ambition to combine AI with social interactivity, keeping ChatGPT relevant in both work and entertainment contexts.
