Apple Gives Green Light to Spotify’s In-App Audiobook Purchases in the US

Apple Lets Spotify US Users Buy Audiobooks in the App

Spotify announced that Apple has approved a new update that lets iPhone users in the U.S. buy audiobooks right inside the Spotify app. Users can now see prices and easily buy extra listening time beyond the included 15 hours.

“This update makes it easier for more people to start listening to audiobooks and helps authors and publishers connect with more fans,”

Following a recent U.S. court decision that prohibited Apple from charging fees for transactions made outside of its App Store, this adjustment was made.

Before this upgrade, iOS users could only purchase audiobooks via the Spotify website. Spotify removed the option to purchase directly in the app back in 2022 because of Apple’s strict rules. Now, with just a few taps, users can purchase without leaving the app.

The same goes for buying more listening time — called “top-ups.” Previously, users had to go online to buy more hours. Now, they can do it from within the app. Each top-up costs $13 for 10 more hours.

Earlier this month, Apple also approved another Spotify update that lets iPhone users see subscription pricing and pay through external links — another big step toward giving users more flexibility.
