Amazon Music announced on Monday the launch of “Fan Groups,” a new social music app feature. It lets users create and join groups based on their favorite genres and artists. Fans can chat, post, and listen to songs shared in these groups.

The feature is in beta and currently available in Canada on iOS and Android devices.

Users can find Fan Groups through the “Find” tab beneath the search bar. Over 30 groups are covering musical interests from indie rock and country to Punjabi and K-pop, according to a company blog post.

Members can create posts, join chat threads, and share or save songs. Users can stream music without leaving the group by tapping the play button at the top. They can also go to the “Music” tab next to “Posts” to browse songs separately.

Artists can also join these groups. They can share exclusive content, connect with fans directly, and build stronger communities.

Anyone can set up a new group. Administrators can mute members or delete messages. Users can report content or block members if needed.

This move is part of Amazon’s strategy to compete with Spotify and other social music platforms. Spotify launched a messaging feature in August and a Jam feature for co-creating playlists.

SoundCloud also added new social features, including playlist sharing based on friends’ listening habits and direct messaging for artists. Stationhead lets users listen to music together during livestream parties.

Amazon plans to roll out Fan Groups to the U.S. and other markets next year.
