Apple May Transform Siri Into a Conversational AI Chatbot

Apple’s long-awaited Siri overhaul might finally make the assistant feel more like a ChatGPT-style chatbot, according to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman. Sources say the new Siri chatbot, planned for iOS 17, could be a highlight at WWDC this June—but of course, plans could still shift.

Internally called “Campos,” the chatbot will handle both voice and text inputs. This is a noticeable change from earlier statements by Apple Senior VP Craig Federighi, who once insisted that Siri shouldn’t become a chatbot. Federighi had said Apple’s AI should be “integrated so it’s there within reach whenever you need it.” Clearly, the company has reconsidered—probably because competitors are moving fast, and users now expect more from AI assistants.

Apple may also be feeling pressure from OpenAI, which is reportedly exploring hardware, led by former Apple design chief Jony Ive. That’s an interesting twist—if OpenAI gets into hardware, Apple’s ecosystem could suddenly feel more threatened.

Historically, Apple has been behind in AI, at least compared with rivals. Its plans for a “more personalized Siri” were delayed multiple times, and last year the company was reportedly talking to OpenAI and Anthropic for possible partnerships. Eventually, Apple chose Google’s Gemini as its AI partner, a collaboration confirmed earlier this month.

Whether this version of Siri can genuinely compete with ChatGPT remains unclear. Still, Apple seems serious about stepping up its AI game. If all goes as planned, WWDC could show us a Siri that feels smarter, more flexible, and, well… a little more human.
